Zane Grey – perhaps the greatest American adventure novelist of the last century – was a frequent visitor to Arizona and the southwest. Many of the stories he prolifically penned over the years were borne of first-hand adventures right here in the White Mountains. On one occasion, while staying at the Butler Lodge, Zane and his brothers asked John Butler to bring them up for a Bronc Bustin’ exhibition with Roy Hall. By day’s end, an excursion was commissioned with John Butler as guide for Zane and company to get in some trail blazing and bronc riding.
